How does aspirating smoke detection work?

An ASD (Aspirating Smoke Detection) system continuously samples the ambient air through a network of perforated pipes. The air is analysed by an ultra-sensitive laser detection chamber (down to 0.005%/m obscuration), capable of catching combustion particles before any visible smoke.

Which environments warrant an ASD?

Data centers and server rooms

HVAC dilutes smoke quickly — a point detector arrives too late. ASD samples directly at rack level and triggers before propagation.

ATEX zones and heavy industry

Standard point detectors aren't allowed in zone 0/20. ASD can be relocated outside the explosive zone, sampling through certified anti-static piping.

Ceilings above 12 m and logistics warehouses

Above 12 m, point detectors lose efficiency (thermal stratification). ASD stays effective up to 25 m ceiling height.

What premium should you accept?

At equivalent coverage, ASD costs 2-3× more than EN54-7 point detection. But 10-year total cost (CAPEX + OPEX + loss avoidance) tips in favour of ASD as soon as protected asset value exceeds €1M or business continuity is critical.
