How does a fire-detection system work?

A fire-detection system continuously monitors a building to identify the first signs of a fire (smoke, heat, flame or gas). When an abnormal phenomenon is detected, it automatically triggers the alarm and can control various safety devices: smoke control, compartmentation, automatic suppression or evacuation.
